Jennifer Desiar of Fort St. John has been named Rising Star of the Year at the 2021 Sage Circle of Excellence Accounting Awards.
Now in its third year, the awards champion the best of Canada’s accounting and bookkeeping community, recognizing how they went above and beyond to strategically help their clients through their second challenging year since the pandemic.
According to Sage, Desiar opened her accounting business, DESIAR Accounting & Bookkeeping Services, in June 2020 during the Covid-19 pandemic.
Desier says she moved to Canada from the Philippines with a double major of BS Commerce in management and accounting, but worked as a live-in nanny when she arrived in 2008 as it was the only way she could get her permanent residency.
Desiar says she dreamed one day of eventually returning to her accounting career, and did so in 2013 as an office employee of a successful local pipeline company, according to Sage.
“I love working with people and numbers but at the same time I love family time. Last year, I decided to start my own company as COVID times meant I needed to be with my child fulltime,” Desiar said in a profile of her company, which works with a number of clients, including restaurants, spas, trucking companies, and consultants.
“I was speechless when Mark from Sage called. Fort St. John is a small town compared to big cities that are listed in the finals. This is a ‘good karma” for working hard all year.”
Desiar says works part-time for another company in the mornings, and in the afternoons with her company. She is also continuing her education online in the evenings. Desiar says her new goal is to get her CPA certification before she turns 50.
